Golden Lion House - a perfect base for touring Devon
Ashburton is perfectly situated for getting the very most out of a holiday in Devon. The town is located within Dartmoor National Park, and there are fabulous moorland walks less than fifteen minutes drive away. The rocky outcrops of Hay Tor and Hound Tor (featured in BBC's "Sherlock"), and the delightful village of Widdecombe ( where scenes from the Steven Spielberg film "War Horse" were shot) are all a similar distance from town. A beautiful forty minute journey across the moor will take you to Tavistock.
The lovely beaches of South Devon are all between half an hour and an hour's drive. You can choose between traditional British seaside towns like Exmouth and Teignmouth, or the unspoilt beauty of Wembury and Mothecombe. Ashburton is midway between Devon's two cities, Plymouth and Exeter, both just half an hour away on the A38. Torbay is a similar distance. Totnes is only twenty minutes away, with its fabulous range of shops, restaurants and cafes.
After filming on Dartmoor, Spielberg said: "I have never before ... been gifted with such an abundance of natural beauty as I experienced filming War Horse. With two and a half weeks of extensive coverage of landscapes and skies, I hardly scratchd the surface of the visual opportunities that were offered to me. "
